With a total of 10.4 kilometers, the course requires not only good fitness, but also skillful maneuvering as there are a few bends along the lake. All bends are marked with buoys, and safety boats are stationed throughout the course, should any assistance be necessary.
Start intervals are 20 seconds between singles and 30 seconds between doubles and quads. Each crew receive a GPS tracker, which allow athletes and coaches to compare their splits with the other competitors.
There are various possibilities for spectators to combine Bern Boat Race with a hike. The start- and finish-line are at the Wohlen bridge (Wohleibrücke). From there, the path along the shore path leads to a nice picnic area, and the race can be followed from numerous points along the trail. The turn-around point, at Otto's Place, is also visible from the shore.
